Olives

For years, the most reputable producers have followed the tradition of the dating olive oil by harvest year, noted as the year in which the harvest began.

In the Northern Hemisphere, whether Italy, Spain or California, the olive harvest takes place October to January. This is October and the current harvest is known as the 2014 harvest. When the olive trees are still being picked in January, this will continue to be labeled as the 2014 harvest.

But in an effort to prove faux freshness, and one-ups-man-ship, California producers have decided that we are already in the midst of the 2015 harvest. That nomenclature may work for automobiles, but we think it is a bit rotten for olive oil.

Don’t be deceived by this new dating schema developed by Californians. Think before you buy.

The first of the new harvest’s award winners have been announced. These olive oil competitions are very important in the world of top quality olive oil, as they recognize the year’s worth effort and care. In this blog post, we will take a look at the announcements from Olio Capitale, SOL d’Oro, and Marco Oreggia’s Flos Olei 2013.

Olio Capitale was held in Trieste in early March, and among the awards, there are a number of olive oils that are well known to us. (For some of the oils listed below, we are still awaiting the 2012 selections).

Flos Olei 2013

The 2013 Flos Olei, published early in the harvest year, is the well regarded Marco Oreggia review of olive oils. In general, Flos Olei 2013 awarded the 2011 selections. It is seen by many as a watchdog of consistent quality in the industry with the idea that the producers provide consistently exceptional olive oils from year to year.

Some folks choose the grocery store oil, assuming it to be extra virgin olive oil. Knowledgable consumers are skeptical, and true fans of olive oil seek award winners. With any of these selections your choices will be a long way from the grocery store shelves. These 2010 olive oils and their coveted awards represent the best olive oils in the world — and these are the top Italian selections.

We scour the olive oil awards as they are released each year (you can find links on our web site) both to identify the awards received by our current producers and to look for new oils to stock. The Olive Oil Times has published an outstanding article on the Tuscan estate, Castello del Trebbio, and the family of Anna Baj Macario. There’s even a discussion of the new oil, which, by the way, is already on the way to us. This article reveals the estate’s role in Italian history (think: de Medici), the production of great olive oil, and thoughts on quality (and adulteration). If you are planning a trip to Tuscany, a visit to the estate should be on your must-do list.

While we have just a few bottles of Castello del Trebbio 2009 remaining, there’s a ship crossing the Atlantic with 2010 Raccolto on board. Of course, we’ll send an email when it is available, but if you’d like personal, early notice just send us an email.
